The Hood Family Reunion Song was written by Doris Chenault Hood,
and she used the music of Ludwig van Bethoven which was written in 1824.
Doris did not know any of the ancestors; but she composed the words
by reading what little history she could learn from family members.

ELIZABETH FLEMISTER HOOD, Ph.D.

Elizabeth Flemister Hood was born in Madison County, Georgia and raised in Brandford, Connecticut.  In 1949 she married Nicholas Hood, Sr. at the Dixwell Congregational Church, New Haven, Connecticut.  Elizabeth Hood graduated from Dillard University, and later earned a Master’s and Doctorate  of  Philosophy from Wayne State University.

Significantly, she earned her college degrees while raising children and working as a teacher and administrator in the Detroit Public School.  Elizabeth Hood leaves a legacy

.achievement .  She rose from the ranks as a foreign language instructor who was fluent in Romance languages to guidance counselor, assistant principal, and principal at Mackenzie High School.  At the time of her death, she was a tenured professor in the education department at Wayne State University.  In her lifetime, Dr. Hood was a much sought after speaker and writer.  She wrote a weekly column for the Michigan Chronicle.

At Plymouth United Church of Christ, Dr. Hood created the first after-school tutorial program, and the foundation for the Plymouth Day School founded in the basement of the church.  Dr. Hood also created a lecture series which brought nationally known speakers to Plymouth Church.  She was one of the founders  and a charter member of the National Organization of Women and one of the early supporters and fund raiser for the Charles Wright Museum of African American History
